Introduction & Background:
The Newlands masjid (mosque), serves as the place of ibadat (worship), for Muslim families in the following surrounding areas:
Newlands; Triomf (Sophiatown); Claremont; Waterval; Albertsville, Bergbron & White Ridge.
Until January last year there was no Madressah facilities in our area. All the surrounding Madressah’s are not within walking distance for the children of our area. As a result most of the families who could not make arrangements for the transportation of their children to other Madressah’s and did not attend Madressah at all.
The need for a madressa resulted in the establishment of the Newlands Madressa Trust.
Classes commenced in January 2007 with just a few students and today there are 3 classes with a total of about 40 students under the tutelage of 2 ustadas and 1 ustaad.
Initially we managed to make up a reasonably fair salary and could see to various other expenses such as kitaabs and stationery by means of monthly donations from concerned people of the locality. As the Madressa grew and so did the monthly expenses with the employment of more ustaadhs/ustaadhas.
Collection Purpose & Objectives:
There is an immediate and dire need for adequate and appropriate classroom floor space to accommodate the increasing number of students.
For this cause and purpose, a 2-Phased Project has been devised and put into operation:
Phase 1:
Construction of duplex adjacent to masjid- to accommodate the imaam & mu’adtheen who are currently residing on the masjid premises;
Phase 2:
Renovation & partitioning of masjid floor space vacated by the imaam & mu’adtheen to accommodate the much needed classrooms, as well as ladies salaah & whudu facilities.
We humbly ask everyone to dig deep into their pockets and contribute towards this noble project.
